NSW CID Members Present at the
Having a Say Conference February 2011
NSW CID Members attended the 2011 Having A Say Conference in Geelong in February.
This is the biggest conference for people with disability in Australia, with over 1000 people attending.
NSW CID Members gave a presentation called: BIG Voices about BIG Choices – Getting Heard about the BIG Issues.
They talked about the submission they made into the Productivity Commissions Inquiry into Long Term Care and Support.
The presentation included:
- Why they spoke up to the government
- How they spoke up to the government
- What happened after they did their submission
The presentation also allowed audience members to have their say about what was important to them.
People said:
- That it was important to have access to advocacy
- That getting the right support throughout your whole life really makes a difference
- It can be hard to speak up and that they do not always get to make decisions about their lives
Congratulations to Shu, Michael, Kim and Michael for all their efforts
in making sure the voice of people with intellectual disability was
heard.

Community Participation Information Sessions
In October 2008 NSW CID conducted information sessions on the Community Participation (CP) program. This was the last of a series of information projects run on the program.
CP is a post school program for young people with disability who may not be able to work in the foreseeable future. Each year young people leaving school with disability are assessed to see whether or not they are eligible for CP, or another post school program.

Launch of 'Enabling Justice' Report
Enabling Justice is a new report which highlights problems for alleged offenders with intellectual disability in the NSW Local Court System. Opportunities to divert people into support services that will avoid repeat offending are being lost. The result is people with intellectual disability being highly represented in prison where they are vulnerable to abuse.
Justice Virginia Bell of the NSW Court of Appeal launched the Enabling Justice report at State Parliament House on 21st May 2008.
Enabling Justice has been produced by the Intellectual Disability Rights Service (IDRS), in conjunction with the Coalition on Intellectual Disability and Criminal Justice and NSW CID
