Participation and our Board of Directors
More than half of our Board of Directors are people with intellectual disability.
We often have people ask us how this works in a meaningful way. We do not claim to have thought of everything but we do have some mechanisms to ensure meaningful participation.
- The NSW Council for Intellectual Disability (NSW CID) employs a participation worker. This is an extremely important position. This person supports people with intellectual disability in meetings and when they are representing NSW CID.
- We translate our documents into easy English. This includes position papers, financial reports, meeting agendas and information. We believe that this adjustment is reasonable and extremely important.
- We have a culture of respect and inclusion.
- We give people the time they need to ask questions, to learn and above all participate in a meaningful way.
- We are open to suggestions and make sure we ask people with intellectual disability what we can do to improve our structures.
If you would like to know more about our Board of Directors you can contact NSW CID on (02) 9211 1611 or 1800 424 065 (if you live outside of Sydney).
