In 1956 a group of parents formed an advocacy organisation in reaction to the lack of support or services for people with intellectual disability. This small advocacy organisation grew to become the peak body representing the rights and interests of people with intellectual disability in NSW. This growth could not have occurred had it not been for the dedication of volunteers and several hardworking community members.

Since 1956 our organisation has been through several name and policy changes.

Over the past 50 years the NSW Council for Intellectual Disability (NSW CID) has moved from lobbying for services on behalf of people with intellectual disability to lobbying for greater social change alongside people with intellectual disability. Our current work is driven by the active involvement of board members with intellectual disability and the issues that the community of people with intellectual disability bring to our attention.

Today NSW CID is committed to supporting people with intellectual disability to take strong leadership roles. We attempt in all of our work to maintain a sharp focus on the rights, participation and inclusion of people with intellectual disability in every area of community life.
