Background to the Library

The Jim McLoughlin Reference Library is named after the late Mr Jim McLoughlin. Jim was a Director of NSW Council for Intellectual Disability (NSW CID) between 1968 and 1988 and was Chairman between 1978 to 1982 and again from 1985 to 1988. He donated a significant number of publications to the early collection.

Library Mission Statement

In addition to Council's lobbying role, the NSW Council for Intellectual Disability (NSW CID) operates an information service comprising a data base of services and support available to people with intellectual disability, and their families and advocates, and a reference library. The purpose of the library is to select and develop materials in different formats to provide a wide range of information resources to members of NSW CID and interested individuals in the community.

The library covers issues related to people with intellectual disability in line with NSW CID's guiding principles and objectives. The subjects covered are those which support people with intellectual disability to participate in their community.  These include accommodation, criminal justice, health, family relationships, government reports and publications, advocacy, employment, education, and more.

The Library is accessible to:

  • NSW CID Staff
  • NSW CID Directors
  • Members of NSW CID
  • People with intellectual disability, their parents, carers and advocates
  • Academics
  • Staff of Health and Community Services organisations
  • Students (by appointment)

Access to Library Resources

The Library will be open by appointment with the Information Officers between the hours of 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday.

Donations

The library welcomes donations of materials with the understanding that they will be evaluated according to the same criteria as those of purchased items. If the items do not meet these criteria, the library reserves the right to dispose of them as it sees fit.
