Health is an very important issue for NSW CID.

What does NSW CID know about health issues for people with intellectual disability?

We know that people with intellectual disability often have bad health.

What does NSW Health say?

For years NSW Health talked about policy changes and training programs for the health system.

These ideas have not changed much for people with intellectual disability.

What does NSW CID say?

There should be ‘specialist resources’ in the health care system for people with intellectual disability.

What are ‘specialist resources’?

Specialist resources are resources made for people with intellectual disability.

These resources can include special knowledge and skills.

Does that mean I can’t go to my local doctor?

No!

It means that there will be experts if you need them.

These experts could help your local doctor if he or she needed it.

These specialists are the same as a person who specialises in knees!!!

Are things changing for people with intellectual disability?

Yes!

NSW CID talked to the Australian Government about a new Medicare item just for people with intellectual disability.

This new item will let doctors have lots more time to spend with a person with intellectual disability for an annual check up.

The Government said yes to this item in February 2007!!!

NSW CID is very pleased!
