Employment is an important issue for NSW CID.

What does NSW CID say about employment?

There are not enough people with intellectual disability in open employment.

The things that stop people with intellectual disability getting open employment often have nothing to do with the person.

What work has NSW CID done on employment?

NSW CID has held rights forums to talk to people with intellectual disability about employment.

NSW CID held the Pathways to Employment Summit in September 2006.

What has NSW CID learned?

People with intellectual disability face many barriers in getting a job.

These barriers are things like:

  • discrimination,
  • money trouble and
  • transport problems.

A big problem is that people with intellectual disability are not given the right supports to find open employment.

People with intellectual disability are not given the right supports at work if they do find open employment.

Many people with intellectual disability do not have much money because there are too many barriers to employment.

The government spends most of its money on programs that do not lead to open employment.

What does NSW CID think?

We think that people with intellectual disability could get a job if there were lots of support.

We think that having a disability should not stop you having a job.

We say that people should feel safe to try and get a job.

We say policies like ‘Welfare to Work’ and the new employment laws do not let people feel safe.

Have your say on Employment

Do you want to work?
Have you had problems finding and keeping a job?

The Australian Government wants to hear your story.
They also want to know about your ideas to fix the problems in employment.

This is part of making a  plan to make it easier to find and keep a job.
It is called the National Mental Health and Disability Employment Strategy.

Ask someone to help you read about the plan.
In it you can choose a way to tell your story.

If you chose to tell your story, mail it to the address in the plan.

We think it is important for people with intellectual disability to tell the government what they think.
It is important that the government knows that people with intellectual disability can work.
