Criminal justice is an important issue for NSW CID.

Who do we talk about when we talk about criminal justice?

NSW CID talks about offenders with intellectual disability.

What is an offender?

An offender is someone who breaks the law.

What work has NSW CID done?

We have done a lot of work on The Framework Report (2001).

What is the Framework report?

The Framework Report talks about the needs of offenders with intellectual disability.

What does the Framework report say?

The Framework report says:

  1. That people with intellectual disability do not get the right supports.
  2. With out the right support people with intellectual disability are more likely to get into trouble with the law.
  3. The Framework report says that the Government should do something about this!
  4. The Framework report also says it costs the Government a lot of money NOT to support people with intellectual disability when they first need support.

So it makes sense to support people with intellectual disability.

What has happened since the Framework report was written?

In the last 5 years some changes have happened.

NSW CID says congratulations to the NSW Government for making some changes.

We still think more work needs to be done!!!

Enabling Justice report

Enabling Justice means helping the right thing to happen.

What is it about?
The report tells about people with intellectual disability who get in trouble with the police.
It talks about how people get into trouble again and again. Too many people end up in jail.
In jail they are likely to be hurt by other people there.
There are chances to help people so they don’t end up in jail. But these chances are being lost.

Who wrote Enabling Justice?
The Intellectual Disability Rights Service (IDRS).
Also The Coalition on Intellectual Disability and Criminal Justice and
The NSW Council for Intellectual Disability (NSW CID).

When can people read the report?
Justice Virginia Bell launched the report on 21st May, 2008, at State Parliament House.
