Accommodation is a very important issue for NSW CID.

What does NSW CID say about accommodation?

We think there are not enough accommodation choices for people with intellectual disability.

We think families need support.

We think people with intellectual disability should be able to live in the community.

What is the state Government doing about accommodation?

The state Government has a policy called ‘Stronger together’.

‘Stronger together’ says how much money the government will spend on accommodation for people with intellectual disability.

What does ‘Stronger together’ say?

‘Stronger together’ promises to give money for:

  1. more accommodation
  2. more respite, and
  3. more therapy places
  4. What does NSW CID think about ‘stronger together’?

We are glad that the Government has made a new plan for disability services.

We are worried that many people will still not have access to accommodation.

We do not know how many people with intellectual disability need accommodation.

We do know that ‘Stronger together’ is not enough money for the people we do know about.

What is NSW CID’s biggest concern about accommodation?

NSW CID is worried that there are about 2,400 people living in large residential centres or institutions in NSW.

We do not think these people should be there!

We think people with intellectual disability have a right to independent adult lives in their communities.

We think people with intellectual disability have a right to support so that they are able to live in their communities.

What does NSW CID say to the Government?

NSW CID tells the Government to stop building more residential centres or institutions.

NSW CID tells the Government to make plans for accommodation for people with intellectual disability that is the same as the rest of the community.

What does NSW CID mean by ‘the rest of the community’?

By this we mean people living alone or in small groups sharing houses or flats where they have their own room.

We think people with intellectual disability should have choices!
